The Human Genome Project

A good immense enterprise

The Human Genome Project (HGP) was an immense Global enterprise: probably the biggest scientific experiment yet attempted. Researchers worked together to read the entire sequence of the DNA letters (bases) from the human genome - more in comparison with 3, 000, 000, 000 of which.

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is usually a genome research centre set up in 1992 through the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council to help promote our knowledge of genomes, and especially to play a substantial role from the sequencing and interpretation of the human genome.

Now - while using 'finished' human sequence released - having it . an Internet connection can admittance the decoded human genome (with the exception of the few gaps that remain) and even print it out in the order that the letters appear*.

Being able to read out the sequence of bases will never actually tell us what each area of the genome does. However, this is a vital piece of infrastructure and an important step towards understanding more in relation to ourselves. Research based on this sequence is providing information about how the body develop and function, and what the results are when things go wrong. Sometime soon, we expect this information to lead to new or improved medical assessments and therapies.
